Lung health check

Invited to a Lung Health Check?

If you smoke, or used to, you may be invited to an NHS lung health check, and asked about your smoking history. This page helps you work it out beforehand.

A CT scanner ready for a scan

In short

A pack year is the same as smoking 20 cigarettes a day for one year. Work out your smoking history here before your lung health check: best guesses are fine, and nothing you enter is stored. The result is for your information; the lung health check team makes its own assessment.

What is a pack year?

A pack year is the same as smoking 20 cigarettes a day for one year. So 10 a day for 2 years is 1 pack year, and 20 a day for 10 years is 10 pack years. Cigars, roll-ups, pipes and other tobacco are converted into cigarettes so that everything can be added up.

Before you start

Think back over the years you smoked: roughly how much you smoked a day, and how that changed. Best guesses are fine.

What the result is for

The result is for your information, and may help you answer questions at your appointment. It does not decide whether you are offered a scan: the lung health check team asks its own questions and makes its own assessment.

Your answers stay on your device. Download a PDF or save a link if you want to keep the result.
