What the calculator stores about you

The calculator does not store your answers. They stay in your browser while you use it, a saved link keeps them inside the link itself, and a PDF is made on request and not kept. The site keeps only monthly totals of how the calculator is used, nothing about individuals.

In short

Nothing you enter in the pack year calculator is stored. Your answers stay in your browser, a saved link carries them inside the link itself, and a PDF is made once and not kept. The site counts monthly totals only, and Google Analytics runs only if you accept cookies.

What happens to my answers while I use the calculator?

Nothing you type is sent to the server while you use it. Your answers stay in your browser.

What about a saved or shared link?

A link to your result carries your answers in the part of the web address after the “#” sign. Browsers do not send that part to the server. Anyone you give the link to can see the result, so treat it like the information in it.

What happens when I download a PDF?

Your answers are sent to the server, used once to make the PDF, and then discarded. The PDF is not stored. Clinicians should never put a patient’s name or NHS number in the reference field.

What happens if I email myself the result?

The PDF is sent once, and your name and email address are then deleted. The email is delivered through SMTP.com, using the WP Mail SMTP plugin.

If you also tick the optional news box, your email address (and name, if you gave it) is kept in the site’s own WordPress database, only to send you occasional news, until you ask to be removed. It is not shared with anyone. To be removed, email mastersnigel@gmail.com or reply to any email from us.

What does the site count?

Monthly totals only: calculations, PDFs, emails, print-outs, news sign-ups, and record lines and links copied. Nothing about individuals is recorded.

Does the site use cookies or Google Analytics?

Google Analytics runs only if you accept cookies on the banner, and your answers and results are never sent to Google. The site also sets a cookie to remember your choice. The embeddable version at /embed/ sets no cookies and runs no analytics.

Is there a limit on requests?

Yes. Requests are rate-limited to prevent abuse. To do this, the site keeps a temporary, scrambled count of requests from each internet connection, for up to 24 hours.

Where is the site hosted?

On a DigitalOcean server in London, through Cloudways. The privacy policy covers the rest, including the contact form and your rights.

Questions

No. Your answers stay in your browser while you use it. A PDF is made on request and not stored.

Anyone you give it to, because your answers are inside the link. Browsers do not send that part of the address to the server.

No. The version at /embed/ sets no cookies and runs no analytics.
